Danny Kaye

In 1963, CBS scored a coup in signing two major talents to headline variety hours, Danny Kaye and Judy Garland. Kaye flatly refused to go on in the Sunday 9:00 PM hour, called “The Graveyard Slot” because no show could survive against “Bonanza” which aired at that time. He was given Wednesday nights at 10:00 pm, where his show fared moderately well for four seasons. Harvey Korman was a regular, and when the Danny Kaye show was cancelled due to slipping ratings in 1967, he jumped ship to a newcomer, The Carole Burnette Show where he stayed for 10 years. The Danny Kaye Show won the Prime Time Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series one time, in its first season. Oh, and the Judy Garland Show? It went head to head with Bonanza and was cancelled after one season. This poster image heralds the first season of The Danny Kaye Show.
