FRANK SINATRA / ELVIS

The Frank Sinatra Timex Show “Welcome Home Elvis” was a special on ABC celebrating Elvis Presley’s return from military service, and his first appearance on television in three years. It was Frank Sinatra’s fourth and last of a series of specials sponsored by Timex. The show also featured members of Sinatra’s Rat Pack, Sammy Davis, Jr., Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford, and his daughter Nancy Sinatra. Elvis would later co-star with Nancy in the 1968 film “Speedway.” Elvis performed some of his own songs, and one of Sinatra’s classic tunes, “Witchcraft,” while Sinatra performed the Elvis classic “Love me Tender.” Colonel Tom Parker made sure that Elvis received an unprecedented $125,000 for his eight minute appearance, more than Sinatra’s income from all four shows. This irritated Sinatra, but the gamble paid off for both “The Voice” (Sinatra) and “The King” (Elvis)- the show pulled 67.7% of the viewing audience that hour.
